I’ve been bad! And when I say bad, I mean I’ve been unproductive. And when I say I’ve been unproductive, I mean I’ve generally just been goofing off and having fun and not keeping up with obligations! With the exception of completing the first rough edit of my new book about retiring in Ecuador over the past few weeks, I’ve mostly been a beach bum!
We’ve spent the last couple of weeks in Cancun. Diane finished the last of her classes required for her ongoing teaching certification (she wants to always maintain her credentials…just in case) and as soon as that was done, we left Merida and headed to Cancun.
The weather has been spectacular with dazzling blue skies, warm breezes off the brilliant jewel- blue Caribbean and temps in the high 80s or low 90s Farenheit. I’ve become a bit scruffy, I’m afraid. I shave only every two or three days and my uniform most days is “sport shorts” and water shoes. For the uninformed, sport shorts are longish swim trunks with pockets and a liner. Some have cargo pockets as well. They serve as an all-purpose uniform here. One can go shopping, return and jump immediately into the pool or the sea without the hassle of changing. Throw on a golf shirt and you are ready for dinner anywhere in Cancun.
I know I’m supposed to be more regular about my blog posts. Like I said…I’ve been BAD! And, I have a magazine editor that would love another piece from me and my webmaster is nudging me to complete a project we have just begun… if only I could get my butt into gear!!! So, this piece is essentially the first step of getting into gear!
In the ongoing assessment and comparison of and between Merida and Cancun, it appears as though Cancun has taken a solid lead. We are “coasties” and being by the sea feeds our souls. Merida is a wonderful city. Life there has been and could continue to be great! But Merida does not have the Caribbean Sea! Yes, our Merida place is only about 20 minutes from the Gulf coast. We’ve been there and it cannot compare with the Caribbean or Cancun. I truly wish it could compare. We have a very nice house in Merida; a house we will both miss if we make the decision to make Cancun our base.
As I’ve previously mentioned, our Cancun condo is really tiny so having a bit more space here would be nice. We have begun to look around for someplace a bit larger. Cancun is also not exactly Mexico. It is a truly International city and the number one tourist destination in the Caribbean. We have begun to expand our excursions, driving throughout the city and away from touristy areas. We like what we have seen so far but we have much more exploring to do.
Merida, on the other hand, is a wonderfully Mexican city with rich Mayan influences and stunning Spanish architecture going back to the 1500s. Someone recently asked how Merida compared to Cancun and I said it was like comparing apples to ducklings. Each city is wonderful for completely different reasons.
We’ve begun to meet a few folks and even Carmine has made a couple of tentative, butt-sniffing forays into friendship with a few small dogs at the beach. Diane’s best friend is coming for a visit next month for Diane’s birthday. We’ve begun to think about a few things to do that will be both fun and won’t break the bank! It’s been pretty easy as the choices are many. A few days ago, Diane and I found a small restaurant set on the bay side of our little Island. It has a pier running out into the crystal-clear water with individual tables set under hand-woven palm covers providing shade. We had an amazing lunch there as we watched small schools of brilliant green minnows being sporadically chased by a small Barracuda lurking in the shadows. He would dart out and snatch one or two if the school swam too close. I’ve even discovered a great spot for fishing and I really like to fish. Haven’t tried it out yet but soon…real soon!
Both Diane and I have learned that we can build a life anywhere but there are some places on the planet where one’s soul actually Sparkles. We could live somewhere else…maybe anywhere and be quite happy or we could choose to Sparkle. For us, Cancun is the Sparkle place and while no definitive decision has been made, I can feel which way the warm Caribbean breezes are blowing.
